The philosophy of the programme is borne out of the necessity to appreciate recent advances in technology to meet the modern-day challenges in Optometry education and present-day eye care practice by seeking to impart the body of knowledge necessary to cope with these advances through the development of abilities, expertise, skill and responsibilities in students.
The programme is tailored towards producing Optometrists equipped with the knowledge and skill to provide comprehensive eye care services, which include the detection of ocular and visual anomalies, correction of refractive and binocular vision problems with appropriate devices, non-invasive management of ocular problems and rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system in the most ethical ways and manners, both nationally and worldwide. Also, to impart the students with the expertise to cope with research, recent advances in technology, materials, machinery and other aspects of vision care industry needed in solving ocular and associated environmental problems in this continuously evolving technological age.
The Optometry & Vision Science programme will follow the University of Ilorin Community Based Experience and Service (COBES) and the national Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) approaches which are student-centred, society-oriented, and problem-solving.
